Course Details

Finland's early education is rated among the best in the world. Nordic Playdates was founded by someone who spent eight years running her own daycare in Finland, and every session leader is trained in the same methods. The result is a playgroup built on genuine Finnish practice.

What does that look like with a one-year-old? It looks like play. Children sort, build, sing, move, and make things, and every material in the room is chosen with care. When a child sorts animals into boxes by colour, she is holding a rule in her head, and that's where maths begins, before any number. Familiar songs returning week after week build the sound awareness that phonics is later built on. Everything in the room is there to help something grow.

The sessions are calm and unhurried, but there is real work happening. Holding a rule in her head while other children move around her, waiting her turn, trying again when something doesn't work, these are big achievements at two. Because she enjoys it, it feels like play to her. Each week brings a gentle next step.

The group is small, a maximum of twelve children, with the same session leader every week, so your child is welcomed by a familiar face and settles quickly. Whoever spends the week with your child is warmly invited along too, a parent, grandparent, or helper, so you can see how she learns and bring some of it home.

At the end of the 5 week season, each parent is given written feedback by the session leader on how their child is learning and what to focus on next.

At its heart, Nordic Playdates builds attention, curiosity, and the joy of being with other people.

8 Years of Experience in Finland

We have been running a daycare in Finland for eight years, and every session leader is trained with what we have learned from it.

Understand what your child is learning

After each session, we will give you a written observation about your child. What they are learning and what we would like to try with them next.

Same session leader every time

A small child settles faster with a face she knows and having the same session leader means they will get to know your child as well.

Tutoring builds knowledge and hobbies build a skill. We build what both of them stand on: attention, curiosity, and the ability to be with other people.

Whoever spends time with the child comes into the room too — a parent, a grandparent or a helper. Twelve children maximum, and the same session leader every week.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age kids are the sessions for?

The sessions are intended for kids aged around 1-3.

What is the session language for Nordic Playdates?

The sessions will be conducted in English while our curriculum follows methods used by the Finnish early education system.

What do kids do at Nordic Playdates?

They play, sort, build, sing, move and make things — with an
adult who knows what to look for and how to extend it. A child
sorting animals into boxes by colour is noticing an attribute and
holding a rule in her head; that is where maths starts, before any
number. Everything in that room is there for a reason.

What makes Nordic Playdates Unique?

Our owner has managed the daycare/kindergarten "Little Heroes" in Finland since 2018 and our expertise stems from actual practice, not just theory. All our session leaders are trained following the principles set in Finnish Early Education.

Can parents join the classes?

Yes, and it is actually a prerequisite. All our sessions are caretaker-and-me based so a parent, grandparent or a helper should join the class as applying the learnings at home is an integral part of the learning path.
