Early Education in Finland

Finnish early education is widely regarded as one of the world's best, praised for producing strong learning outcomes without testing, ranking, or pressure. It is built on the "educare" principle: education, care, and teaching as one unified whole, delivered by highly trained teachers under a national curriculum that sets broad goals but leaves methods to each professional.

Learning at this age happens almost entirely through play. Children explore in environments designed for discovery, while teachers watch closely, following each child's interests and gently extending them. Sorting animals by colour becomes early maths; a made-up song becomes phonemic awareness.

How We Apply This at Nordic Playdates

Learn Through Play

At ages 1-3 play is how children make sense of the world. Rather than separate play from learning, Nordic Playdates uses children's natural curiosity in designed environment to teach them concepts. Behind the playfulness sits serious pedagogical intent.

Individual Learning

While the playdates are in groups of maximum 12 kids, after each 5 week season, every child gets an individual learning feedback based on observation, documenting what the child did and what they should focus on next.

Curated Environments

Everything in the room has a purpose. The environment has been designed to help kids form concepts that form the basics for phonics, mathematics and social interactions. A child who learns to focus and cooperate through play will pick up academics easily later.

Finnish from Practice

Our founder has a degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Helsinki and has been running a daycare/kindergarten in Finland for 8 years. All our session leaders have been trained to understand and apply Finnish early learning methods to each class we teach.
